Where Compassion Meets Action: Why Volunteering Matters More Than Ever

By: Dr. MC Reyes, Ph.D.

Hi There!

National Volunteer Week is upon us, and it has always feels personal to me.

As the founder of The Compassionate Hearts United Foundation, Inc., I’ve had the privilege of witnessing what happens when ordinary people choose to show up for others. Not because they have to... but because they care enough to act. And that choice, repeated across communities, is what quietly reshapes the world.

Why This Week Matters

National Volunteer Week runs from April 19 thru April 25, 2026. This week-long event isn’t just about recognition... it’s about reflection. It invites us to pause and ask a simple question: What does it mean to be there for someone else?

In the nonprofit space, we often talk about impact in numbers, such as the meals served, families supported, hours logged. Those metrics matter. But what stays with me are the moments you can’t quantify:

  • A volunteer sitting with someone who just needed to be heard.

  • A small act of kindness that restored someone’s sense of dignity.

  • A team of strangers becoming a community through shared purpose.

These are the real outcomes of service. They ripple outward in ways we may never fully see.

The Heart Behind Service

When I started The Compassionate Hearts United Foundation, Inc., the vision was simple: bring people together to lead with empathy and take meaningful action. What I didn’t fully grasp at the time was how transformative volunteering would be... not just for those receiving help, but for those giving it.

Doing good for others has a way of grounding you. It shifts your perspective. It reminds you that, despite everything that can divide us, compassion is still a powerful common language.

In a world that often moves fast and feels disconnected, volunteering creates space for something different... connection, presence, and purpose.

It’s Not About Perfection

One misconception I often hear is that you need a lot of time, money, or expertise to make a difference. You don’t.

What matters is willingness.

Some of the most impactful volunteers I’ve met are people who simply decided to start where they are, with what they have. An hour of time. A listening ear. A skill they were willing to share.

Service doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. Consistency matters more than scale.

Building Stronger Communities

At its core, volunteering strengthens the fabric of our communities. It builds trust. It fosters understanding. It reminds us that we are not separate from one another... we are responsible for one another.

Through our work at The Compassionate Hearts United Foundation, Inc., I’ve seen how collective effort can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and unity. When people come together with compassion at the center, real change becomes possible.

A Simple Invitation

If there’s one thing I hope people take away from National Volunteer Week, it’s this: you have something valuable to offer.

You don’t need to wait for the “right time” or the “perfect opportunity.” Start small. Start local. Start now.

Because every act of kindness, no matter how small, adds up. And together, those acts create a culture where compassion isn’t the exception, but the norm.

From all of us at The Compassionate Hearts United Foundation, Inc., thank you to every volunteer who continues to lead with heart. Your impact reaches further than you know.
