World Mental Health Day: Taking Care of Ourselves and Each Other

By Dr. MC Reyes, Ph.D.

Hey There,

Today is a special day — it’s World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, promoting mental well-being, and advocating for support and understanding. But have you ever wondered how this global observance day began?

World Mental Health Day has its roots in the efforts of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), which was founded in 1948. The WFMH recognized the need to destigmatize mental health issues and create a platform for open discussion. In 1992, they initiated World Mental Health Day, and it has been observed annually on October 10th ever since.

So, why is it crucial to pay attention to our mental health? Well, think of it this way: our minds are like engines that power our lives. Just as we maintain our cars and appliances, we must also maintain our mental well-being. Good mental health is the foundation for a fulfilling life. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and it influences our relationships, work, and overall quality of life.

But it’s not just about self-care; it’s also about being there for others. Life can be a rollercoaster, and sometimes, those around us may be silently struggling. That’s where the importance of checking on others comes in. A simple “How are you doing?” or a heartfelt conversation can make all the difference. Remember, we’re all in this journey together, and a little empathy goes a long way.

As the ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, once said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” This timeless wisdom reminds us that taking care of our mental health isn’t just a one-day affair. It’s an ongoing process, and it starts with acknowledging its importance.

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s make a commitment to prioritize our own mental well-being and extend a helping hand to those around us. Together, we can create a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health, and where everyone has the support they need to thrive.

Remember, you are never alone in this journey. Let’s work towards a healthier, happier world, one conversation and one step at a time.

Happy World Mental Health Day everyone! 🙏❤️
